Although there were 42 water hydrants on board, the system was designed with the assumption that no more than six would ever have to be used at any one time. On the morning of September 8, 1934, en route from Havana to New York, the ship caught fire and burned, killing 137 passengers and crew members. The inquiries concluded that there was no organized effort by the officers to fight and control the fire or close the fire doors.
